They're doin a docu-drama kind of adaptation of the play 'Batang Pro'. He amanaged to convince me to act in it, and I play 'Nado" who's supposed to be - get this- a 12 year old callboy! Needless to say, I had a lot of misgivings before I said yes. I mean, Hello!!! Do I look like I'm friggin twelve years old!!! I don't think so! Well, they said they couldn't cast a real prepubescent boy, because no parent in his/her right mind would allow their kids to play prostitutes with warped psyche and foul mouths and all. Ok, they had a point. But could I pass for a callboy? At the risk of perpetuating steroetypes, I don't think I could qualify as a down-and-outer in the Manila setting. I'm too fair-skinned, too makinis - as compared to your average Pinoy 'street person'. And I'm too FAT! I mean, have you ever seen a chubby slum dweller?

At the end I said yes. And it was a good experience. I saw some of the stuff they shot somewhere in Quiapo where they interviewed prostitutes that weren't of legal age, and lemme tell you, it was heart-wrenching. Seeing these kids talking about their jobs - all calloused and numbed - as if selling one's body was something everyone did, it'll make you shudder. I mean, what has happened to our country? How low have we sunk? A country where kids are faced with no choice but to sell themselves just to survive is seeriously a f*cked-up nation.

At the end of the play, Nado tells his best friend Ricky that he has decided to kill himself, to walk into a burning building coz, "Doon, mabilis akong matutupok, mabilis na kakainin ng apoy." It isn't surprising that Nado's life leads him to destruction. What's astonishing is that Ricky does nothing to save his friend. He just stands there as Nado walks into the fire. Please, let's not be like Ricky. Leet'sdo what we can to save these kids from their lives slowly leading to destruction.

Musings in Manila

UYYY!!! I'm back online! And i'm still in Manila!

Ok, for those of you who're like "What the hell is he talking about?!", here's an

UPDATE!!

I got a scholarship last year to study BA Musical Theatre (hons) in Singapore. Learned a lot of stuff, had tons of fun, yadda yadda. Anyway, what the school meant by saying ' scholarship' was a 70% tuition subsidy. Not bad, when the normal tuition is S$18000 freakin bucks. But, living expenses, transpo and food, stuff for projects, etc. have to be shouldered by yours truly.

ANd so, with the current state of our economy, the continuing depreciation of the Peso, and all the other bad stuff in our otherwise lovely Philippine Islands, I have decided to put my studies ther on hold. Me and my family just can't afford it right now.

Yes, I blame ATE GLO!!!

But seriously, i'm really quite fine. I'm happy. I employ a rather fatalistic view in life. Kung anong mangyayari, mangyayari. What will happen, happens. Despite whatever our efforts. There will always be forces stronger than us at work. You got to just hang in there. Because i know that the Big Guy Up There has a plan for me, and if that includes me not studying in Singapore for the time being, so be it.

But I still blame PGMA for a lot of other things.

...................

A lot of stuff has happened to me since i got back last November. First off, i got chubbier. It's my darned grandmother's cooking! Honestly, her sole purpose in life is to feed her grandchildren, or anyone else for that matter, to bursting! All my ugly fat class pictures and the humiliation and embarassment that stem from them, i owe to her. Seriously though, my lola cooks extraordinarily well. I mean, don't all lolas do?

Ok, i take it back: Not a lot of things have happened since i got back here. All i've been doing is bumming and vegging. I did a show for the CCP, but other than that, Zilch! I've been thinking of getting a job at a call center but i feel that would be underutilizing my talents. Still, it is a way of making money, and money i could use a lot of right now.

CIAO!!!
